Sweet Manhattan is a classic cocktail that has been in existence since 1850. It owes its name to the popularity of the fruit brandy, then called “mammoth” and now known as Knickerbocker, which was made by the Knickerbocker Company of New York City. The drink also gained popularity at that time with the U.S. Military, who favored it for its ability to ward off scurvy.

The sweet manhattan cocktail is classic yet very underrated among the bartender’s repertoire. It’s rather simple to prepare and you can use any spirit of your choice. As its name suggests, this cocktail consists of two parts: Whiskey (or other distilled spirits) and sweet vermouth. The alcohol content should reach 28% in order to achieve full flavor notes from both ingredients separately, but if you wish to avoid such high proof drink, you can always start with a mixture of 4 parts booze (whiskey or other distilled drinks) and 1 part sweet vermouth by adding one more ounce or 2 drops of each ingredient for every 1/3 oz.
